Custom Laser Cutting Services in Pakistan

Custom Laser Cutting Services in Pakistan: A Practical Guide Based on Real Experience

Introduction

Custom Laser Cutting Services in Pakistan My introduction to laser cutting happened some five years past in helping a friend to start a small furniture enterprise in Lahore. He required complex wooden patterns of ornamental screens, and conventional methods of cutting could not provide the accuracy he required. That introduction has given me a rabbit hole to explore the laser cutting industry in Pakistan, and since then I have worked with several service providers throughout the country on various projects.

Even these few years have seen a dramatic change in the landscape. What was previously a highly professional service where when you need one you had to travel to a big city to find it has now become quite widespread albeit quality and possibilities still differ greatly based on where you and who you deal with.

Where Laser Cutting Actually Happens in Pakistan

The main centers of professional laser cutting services are still Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad. This is more so in Lahore which has focused most of its workshop around industrial regions such as Kot Lakhpat and Sundar. I’ve already been to maybe a dozen of operations in these parts of town, with small shops that have one Chinese-made machine all the way up to real workshops with a variety of high end laser cutters that work with most types of materials.

Laser cutting industry of Karachi is concentrated around SITE and Korangi industrial areas. Proximity to import infrastructure is an advantage to the city, in the sense that newer equipment and materials usually find their way to the city first. A provider of mine, close to SITE, last year had recently purchased a fiber laser cutter- the accuracy on 3mm stainless steel was really spectacular.

What Can Actually Be Done

Amazing people are still surprised with the versatility of laser cutting. I have watched highly ornate jewelry pieces and metal parts used in industry cut with a laser in Pakistani workshops.

The most common materials are likely to be wood and MDF. Laser cutting is applied by interior designers in designs of jaali, decorative panels, furniture pieces and building details. Recently, I was at a cafe in the DHA of Lahore with a complete feature wall cut in geometric patterns using a laser cutter using wood, which would have cost me a fortune in old fashioned cutting techniques.

Acrylic cutting has now grown enormous in signage, display stands, awards and ornamental products. It is hard to get the clean edges laser cutting that acrylic provides. One of my corporate clients required 200 unique acrylic desk nameplates with their logo – laser cutting was the only option on that size and level of complexity.

Metal cutting (mild steel, stainless steel, aluminum) has industrial uses, but more and more architectural and artistic uses as well. Metal laser cutting is a more powerful type of laser cutting, and fewer people provide this service, and its price is higher. However, in the case of custom metal brackets, industrial components or artistic metal work, the accuracy is worth the cost.

Laser cutting in fabrics and leather is still somewhat of a niche. In Karachi and Lahore, there are a few service providers who serve the fashion industry with this. The benefit is that more complicated patterns are cut without fraying but research needs more effort to locate an expert working with these materials.

The Quality Question

This is one of the lessons that I got the hard way; not every laser cutting shop has the same output, at least in terms of similar machines. The distinction typically boils down to operator proficiency, equipment maintenance and quality control procedures.

One time I had a design laser cut onto 50 wooden coasters. The one I came to initially offered at very reasonable prices and in very short timeframes, but the quality was also inconsistent: the work was either slightly burnt, or quite coarse, and the sizes were different enough to be felt with.

Pricing Reality in Pakistan

Laser cutting Pakistan is typically priced according to time spent cutting, type of material to be cut, complexity and equipment used can occasionally be charged. Some providers have a different pricing structure, and it is difficult to make a one-to-one comparison.

To cut basic MDF or plywood, you can plan on PKR 150- 400 per cutting minute in general, but depending on the complexity of the design and your provider will vary greatly. The plain design could be sliced in 5 minutes; the complex design in the same size could be sliced in 20 minutes.

Working With Providers: Practical Tips

Through a number of projects I have learnt several things that could save you the frustration:

Provide proper design files. Best are the vector formats (AI, DXF, SVG). Conversion to raster images is possible but the precision is usually lost. Some of the providers that I have worked with wasted much time cleaning up ill prepared files which slowed down projects.

Write out material specifications. 3mm wood is not particular enough, all wood is cut differently and gives a different result; plywood, MDF, solid wood. Precisely state what you desire or collaborate with the provider and settle on suitable materials.

Ask to order larger samples. A reputable provider must be prepared to cut a sample before making such a big order. This reveals design glitches, material hitches or quality glitches.

Realize the turnaround times. Simple work could be done the same day or within a day. Business orders may require up to one week or longer processing time. Rush services are available and are usually charged at a premium.

Conclusion

Gaps exist in the laser cutting industry in Pakistan and notwithstanding the increasing capacity. Very specialized materials, very large format cutting, and some other state of the art techniques are difficult to local source.

Very heavy cutting of metal (more than 10-12mm) involves machine tools that are industrial in nature and not available in many service providers in Pakistan. In that case, fabrication shops with plasma or waterjet cuts could prove to be superior.

Is it possible to have laser cutting performed on one or two pieces?

Yes, but there are minimum fees. Large runs are relative comparatively cheaper than small quantities because they involve setup time, and minimum fees.
